The Private Equity group in particular has clients in every major pocket of capital in both the US and in China.

    We are currently seeking a Assistant Vice President-level Portfolio Manager. The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for underwriting, credit monitoring and portfolio management for the Private Equity group’s clients in the Eastern U.S., which is one of the largest and fastest-growing portfolios in the commercial bank. The Private Equity group currently manages credit facilities totaling over $2 billion for a variety of private investment firms and funds located in the U.S. and China, approximately half of which are to private investment firms located in the Eastern U.S. This position will be based in Newton, Massachusetts.


    • Manage and oversee the loan portfolio, and assess the ongoing credit risk and quality, in partnership with Relationship Managers
    • Primary day-to-day contact to respond to requests and questions from existing clients
    • Supervise a team of Junior Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts in the Newton office.
    • As appropriate to experience, also acting as informal senior portfolio manager for the whole team for special projects requiring coordination amongst the various teamlets
    • Analyze financial data to determine the merits of specific loan requests, and recommend structure to Relationship Managers
    • Assist with due diligence/analysis on new both new and existing client relationships and prepare written underwriting memos for credit approval as appropriate
    • Work with other Private Equity team members and credit to monitor existing credits and maintain compliance with facility covenants and other terms
    • Ensure the portfolio administration and risk management of each client relationship is in compliance with established EWB credit policy, procedure and business strategy as well as commercial and regulatory guidelines
    • Gather and analyze portfolio data for senior management, in partnership w team head and RMs
    • Work with Relationship Managers to identify potential opportunities for cross-sell including deposit, trade, treasury management, foreign exchange, private banking, asset management, and other services to both existing and prospective clients; provide advice to clients regarding general banking needs
    • Monitor loan repayment activities and financial condition of borrowing clients and take necessary action to collect past due accounts and ongoing repayment ability of all other accounts. May assume overall responsibility for the credit quality of the loan portfolio
    • May make presentations on specific loans and participate in the bank's Loan Approval Process, recommending approval and appropriate structure of credits
    • May work with regulators and internal auditors to supply informational needs on client reviews
    • Manage the renewal process by working with the Relationship Manager/Financial Consultants, the client, and Credit
    • May act as a contact manager for non-borrowing accounts and deposit clients for matters relating to other banking services
    • Participates in Bank marketing activities, and community & business functions/groups to ensure a positive image for the Bank within the team’s marketplace
    • Perform other duties and special projects as needed
    • Potential opportunities to meet with clients and prospective clients locally and in other cities


    • Flexibility and adaptability to a dynamic environment, and ability to learn quickly in a high-volume transaction scenario.
    • Strong writing, interpersonal and communication skills are critical
    • Assertive and self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
    • Ideally 4-5 years of banking experience, including at least three years of credit portfolio management experience and credit training
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; preference for finance or accounting major or concentration.
    • Working knowledge of private equity and the major components of investment vehicles.
