Overview

The Director of Tax oversees all operational aspects of the bank’s tax function, including income tax provision (ASC 740), federal and state tax compliance, management of tax audits, and operational support for tax planning initiatives. This role ensures accurate and timely tax reporting, strengthens internal controls, and drives process improvements across all tax workflows.

Responsibilities

Tax Provision (ASC 740)

  • Lead quarterly and annual consolidated income tax provision processes.
  • Oversee current/deferred tax calculations, valuation allowance assessments, and uncertain tax positions.
  • Ensure SOX‑compliant documentation and support external auditors.

Tax Compliance

  • Manage preparation, review, and filing of all federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns.
  • Ensure accurate estimated tax payments and statutory filing obligations.
  • Maintain tax calendars, workflow tools, and quality‑control processes.

Tax Audits & Controversy

  • Lead IRS and state income tax audits, including IDR responses and data coordination.
  • Evaluate exposures, maintain audit support files, and communicate status to leadership.

Support for Tax Planning

  • Partner with senior tax leadership on planning initiatives by providing modeling, data analysis, and compliance/provision integration.
  • Conduct technical research and help operationalize planning outcomes.

Process & Technology Optimization

  • Enhance tax systems, automation, and workflow efficiency (e.g., provision and compliance software).
  • Maintain process documentation and ensure strong operational controls.

Leadership

  • Manage and mentor tax operations staff.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Legal, and external advisors.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA, MST, or JD/LLM preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of progressive corporate tax experience.
  • Strong background in ASC 740, tax compliance, and tax audit management.
  • Banking or financial services experience preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Technical tax expertise (federal, multistate and international).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage complex deadlines and multiple deliverables.

Compensation

The base pay range for this position is USD $180,000.00/Yr. - USD $260,000.00/Yr. Exact offers will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
